South of France 14th Century Village Chateau to rent in Languedoc, sleeps 13.
This Renaissance village Château in the Languedoc, South of France once belonged to Marguerite de Navarre, sister of the King, Francois I. There are still a few 14th century architectural details remaining, however the 17th century renaissance style dominates. The Chateau is, in effect, 2 houses in an L-shape around a walled central courtyard with a swimming pool.
The 'Master' house (250m2) has some extraordinary stonework with vaulted archways and a grand staircase, and the 'Maison d'Amis (200-250m2), with partial air conditioning, has also retained some of its grandeur. This Languedoc Chateau has been cleverly restored preserving the authentic carved limestone window surrounds and doorways, especially in the intimate entry courtyard.
This is ideal for 2 or 3 families who want to be holiday together in the South of France and yet preserve a sense of independence. The total living space comprises 550m2.
*Please note that in April and over the Easter period only 2 week bookings are accepted for both 'Maison de Maitre' and 'Maison d'Amis'. It is possible to rent just the 'big' house 'Maison de Maitre' for one week from April.
Family Holiday accommodation in the heart of a Languedoc village
This South of France Chateau makes a change from renting a french villa, below is a detailed description.
'MAISON DE MAITRE' Main house (250m2)
Enter through the enclosed walled courtyard full of amazing carved architectural stone features - one can eat there in the summer as well as by the pool. Large entry hall with attractive tiled floor, which leads to a magnificent living room (42m2). The stonework around the windows and the vaulted archway, as well as the large painted beams and a wooden ceiling 'a la francaise', are an echo of renaissance elegance, however, the living room is full comfortable furniture and has a few nice antique pieces. There is a regal stone fireplace and French windows which lead directly into the garden and a terrace with pool.
From the living room one can pass through to a large airy, modern, independent kitchen/dining room (25m2). At one end you have a fully equipped kitchen with plenty of work surfaces and at the other you have a large dining table.
The kitchen goes through to the pantry/laundry room, 7m2.
The second door in the kitchen goes out to a 'secret walled courtyard' remarkable for it's restoration of the carved stone details rising quite high - ideal for eating out when the sun is high and providing the much needed shade at noon. The entrance hall also has a 'front door' entrance into a gravelled forecourt large enough to park 3 cars comfortably and securely behind large metal gates.
Wide stairs (17 shallow steps) lead to the upper floor bedrooms.
The stairs lead to a study/bedroom with a single bed. (In this room there is another wooden staircase which is blocked off and gated for the owner's private use).
2nd bedroom - Master Bedroom (18m2) - Twin Room - 2 Napoleonic single beds close together, (equivalent to a king sized) each with their own covers. Balcony overlooking the garden and pool.
3rd bedroom (14m2) - queen sized bed with a balcony looking over the garden and the pool.
Across the corridor there is a very large bathroom with a free standing 'Venetian' shower, a bath, 2 wash hand basins and an attractive exposed stone wall.
Independent wc adjacent to the above bathroom.
Fans in each bedroom.
'MAISON D'AMIS' (200-250m2)
Air conditioning in 3 bedrooms with the fourth bedroom automatically benefiting from the air conditioning in the other 3.
The 'Maison d'Amis' is just across the garden from the 'maison de maitre' also overlooking the pool, comprising ground floor and two storeys above.
2 steps lead into a large open plan living room/kitchen. There are two comfortable sofas and a TV. The open plan kitchen comprises a double sink, an oven, a cooker and a small fridge.
Lovely old terracotta stairs (17 steps - quite steep and narrow) go up to the first floor landing.
Off the landing there is an independent wc. A separate shower room with a wash hand basin.
1st Bedroom - (15m2) - 2 single beds
2nd Bedroom (13m2) - 1 queen size bed - both these bedrooms look out on to the garden and the pool.
Turning stairs climb up to the second floor:
3rd Bedroom (14m2) - 2 single beds twinned together
4th Bedroom (13m2) - 2 single beds twinned together - these also overlook the garden and pool - quite low window ledges so may be unsuitable for toddlers, although there are shutters in all the bedrooms).
Again on the landing there is a separate wc and a shower room with a wash basin.

The draw of the Chateau was such that we seldom left, with the pool (albeit rather cold) and garden providing ample entertainment for the length of our stay, the sun shone, we topped up our tans and played as you should on the best type of holiday! We loved the features of the garden and its position of affording shade during the length of the day or full sun as required made the temperature tolerable and avoided excess exposure. We had a wonderful holiday staying at your beautiful property in Montblanc. It catered for a large group of people very well and is near to the sea and interesting surrounding towns and cities. Thank you for letting us stay at your beautiful property. Best wishes,Paula, South France Villas Client, August 2019
Thanks so much and thank you for sharing the chateau with us. We loved it and all your beautiful things. Best,Claire and family, South France Villas Client, August 2016
We loved our stay here – far exceeded all of our expectations. We met up with a group of friends for a stay in August of 2016 and couldn’t have been happier. We left our booking a little late and were surprised this one was still available. 14 of us in all – 7 adults and 7 kids (one baby). We knew the house would be nice from the pictures and it didn’t disappoint. Very French and just beautiful. So much space and really well thought out – place to eat outside, tons of space for the kids, near a historic church and walking distance to the little shops that make France so great – bakery, butcher, fruit & veg specialty shops and a small supermarket (two big ones just a ten minute drive away). The biggest surprise was the village overall. We loved being in a smaller village and it had much more life than we were expecting. They had a festival when we were there (complete with a walking around black fireworks flaming paper mache bull) and on our last night they had a small block party for karaoke night where they blocked off the main street – so much fun. I knew I’d be drinking lots of wine and eating lots of cheese on this trip, but the last thing I thought I’d be doing was singing (terribly) with a bunch of French locals at midnight. 20min drive to great beaches near Adge (Rochelongue was our favorite – where we ate at L’infini). We also saw the fireworks there on the Wed – beautiful. Loved this villa and Montblanc. Staying away from one of the bigger cities really turned out to be a bonus – Montblanc was such a surprise – so much character and not overcrowded with tourists. Definitely recommend this villa to anyone considering it. Mike, South France Villas Client, August 2016
