Accommodation Details

Marrakech Luxury Holiday Home – Dar Amizmiz – Contemporary Retreat in Morocco.

This luxury 5 bedroomed Moroccan Holiday Villa has clean simple lines and offers 1000m2 of stunning living space - the concept was that of a linear frame with a spine from which the different spaces have been grafted on.

The wide pathway leading to the front door starts your architectural experience - lined with palms to the left and a slate wall of water to your right - a stunning entrance.

Hand cut ceramic shapes in a mosaic form a traditional Zellige "welcome mat" leading you in through the huge pivotal front door where there is another slate wall feature.

The ground floor houses the enormous living space, which incorporates part of the swimming pool, it has floor to ceiling windows that fully retract and lead out onto a large semi-covered terrace bringing the outdoors truly indoors.

This open plan living area, with 4m high ceilings, has a library wall at one end and is divided by an immense feature fireplace and thus creates different spaces - the walnut topped bar is the perfect spot for that evening aperitif or informal dining, a more formal dining space with Walnut table and a TV area with banquettes.

The furnishings have been sourced by the Owners with great care from Bali, France and Morocco an eclectic mix of vintage, contemporary and traditional with the emphasis on comfort and practicality. Sofas and chairs are strategically placed around the living space accessorised with modern lighting and objets d'art.

The Gardien can arrange for provisions to be purchased on your behalf and for the Cook/Maid to prepare meals as required (ingredients paid for locally).

The Cook/Maid will be on site from 0800 to prepare breakfast and stay all day (discreetly in a staff room behind the kitchen) until 1700, she can be asked to prepare meals and stay later if required.

The fully equipped kitchen is at your disposal and/or staff are available.

Independent wc in the entrance corridor.

From the living space a long corridor leads to 3 ground floor bedrooms which have large floor to ceiling windows giving access out to the garden, the terraces offer private space where you can put your sunlounger.

From a staircase off the living area the other 2 bedrooms are on the first floor and each have a terrace overlooking the garden and beyond.

Each of the 5 bedrooms have:

High quality King-size beds (180cm) which can be easily transformed into two singles
Air-conditioning
Large sliding windows opening out onto the garden, balcony or terrace
Large and spacious en-suite bathroom with separate wc
Sitting area and TV
Dressing area
Safe

4 of the 5 rooms have fireplaces that burn wood and can be switched to Ethanol, should you choose to visit in the cooler months. (Bedroom 3 is the exception as the Owners wanted to make the most of a triple aspect view from this room).

Bathrooms/Shower rooms:

Ground floor:-
Bedroom 1 - Bath and shower
Bedroom 2 - Bath and shower
Bedroom 3 - Shower

First floor:
Bedroom 4 - Shower
Bedroom 5 - Shower

The ground floor bathrooms open out onto the garden and the upstairs ones afford a view as far as the Medina and the famous Koutoubia mosque.

Each contemporary bathroom is finished with a modern material that resembles the traditional Moroccan Tadelakt effect.

The villa also has a central heating system and there are radiators in each room.

A sound system both indoors and outdoors can be connected to your own personal media.

One of the outdoor patios leads to the Hamman followed by the Massage room (massages available on request) and Fitness room which open out on to the east side of the garden.  There is a shower and wc here too.

Outside Details

The entrance to this beautiful Morrocan holiday villa is lined with olive trees and a "Gardien's" house keeps access secure.

The landscaped garden of apprx 2.4 acres is a verdant paradise with a variety of trees including palms, orange, lemon, over 50 olive trees and large areas laid to lawn - it gives you a real sense of space.  Plus the 180° view towards the Atlas Mountains, which are often snow capped, is simply stunning.

The main feature is the bespoke swimming pool which dominates the front of the villa. Unique in style and shape, it flows from the exterior into the living area and has a section with jets giving part of the pool an effervescent effect.  The pool is treated by hydrolysis to eliminate any chemicals and odour, particularly inside the villa. There is the possibility to heat the pool for a supplementary charge.

The exterior of the pool measures 17m x 5m x 1.3m - the BBQ side of the pool is shallow and the other side has the graduated "plage californie".

The interior part of the pool is 4m x 4m x 1.3m and accessed by Roman steps. The Owners have a portable barrier that can be put in place around the interior part of the pool as a security measure for small children.

If you want to really chill there is even a central island with palm tree and room enough for a table and lounger!

To separate the pool from the interior and exterior there is a huge bay window, which slides open fully if required.

There are a numerous areas to sit and relax either in the sun or in the shade, including a Berber tent amongst the olive trees. Connect your media to the sound system and listen to your favourite tunes by the pool.

For that alfresco meal there is a BBQ area and outdoor dining facilities to enjoy those lovely Moroccan evenings.

From the patio a path leads to the Hamman and on to the Massage room (massages available on request) and Gym which open out on to the east side of the garden. There is a shower and wc facility here too.

Anyone for tennis - there is a private floodlit court in the grounds!

Plenty of private parking.

Nearby Attractions & Activities

'SOMEONE must have rubbed a brass lamp and let a genie out of a bottle. That's the only conclusion I can draw, given the changes to Marrakech since my last visit a decade ago' writes Susan Spano, Times Staff Writer.

The city was difficult to navigate, with few street signs in the maze-like Medina, and it had only a handful of hotels and restaurants suitable for tourists. At night, the non existent sidewalks of Marrakech were rolled up.

The eight gates of the walled city, built in 1070, are now flung open wide. An influx of Northern European snowbirds has slowed the retreat of the moneyed classes from the Medina to the suburbs. Many of the newcomers are architects and designers who have restored old townhouses as restaurants and guesthouses, helping to make Marrakech the coolest, chicest city in the Maghreb.

A European influence

The Europeans brought their sense of style with them so that these days, almost everywhere you turn in Marrakech you see something new; traditional djellaba robes and babouche slippers in fun, new fabrics; European-inspired gourmet twists on recipes for such old Moroccan standards as tajine, a ubiquitous stew; and a host of trendy new boutique hotels.

Best of all, people have rediscovered the elegant architecture of the hermetic Medina, which blends austere Islamic abstraction with Moorish embellishment, sub-Saharan design and the colourful folk art of the Berber people of the Atlas Mountains.

The genie behind the city's transformation was King Mohammed VI, who took the throne of the democratic monarchy of Morocco in 1999. Two years later, he launched an initiative to ready the country to receive 10 million tourists by 2010.

Main attractions

The Koutoubia mosque, a Marrakechi landmark, surrounded by sunstruck rose gardens and distinguished by a 230ft, pink sandstone tower, the prototype of landmark minarets in Seville, Spain, and in Rabat, Morocco's capital.

The Place Jemaa el-Fna, the heart of the medina and the liveliest UNESCO World Heritage Site I've ever seen.

Incomparably seductive souks, Berber carpets, spices, silver, Berber jewellery.

Ben Youssef Medersa, one of the Muslim world's great educational centres.

The recently restored, domed Qubba, a medieval water station, and the Museum of Marrakech, which puts contemporary art in the frame of a late 19th century Moroccan palace.

South of the Place Jemaa el-Fna, there are palaces, gardens, and museums, such as Dar Si Said, dedicated to the arts and folk crafts of Morocco.

On twisting alleyways nearby is Dar Tiskiwin, an elegant townhouse, open to the public as a museum and full of Moroccan and sub-Saharan wonders collected by Bert Flint, a Dutch expatriate.

The Place Jamaa el-Fna Marrakech is always a little bit of everything: djellabas and babouches, bright colours, energy, heat. Once you've wandered around the stalls, gorged on all the mouthwatering food and watched everything on the square it's time to retreat to one of the many cafes and watch the goings-on from a distance.

In terms of views, though not of food, the best are the rooftop cafes. From here you can see the entire square of Jemaa el-Fna: the smoky and brightly lit food stalls are the centre, but circles of locals form all around the square watching storytellers and actors, and around the edges are the juice stalls selling fresh orange juice.

On the northern side are the souks - full of anything you could possibly want to buy, and lots of things you definitely don't! There are tourists aplenty in Jemaa el-Fna and it's tempting to dismiss it all as a commercial show, but the stories are all in Arabic and Berber and plenty of locals come here regularly as well. The monkeys, snake charmers and fortune tellers seem purely for the benefit of tourists though and you might find one evening here is enough - although most vistors come back night after night.
