Planning a getaway to France and want to bring your four-legged friend along? You’re in luck! France is a pet-friendly destination, and here at South France Villas we have many beautiful villas that welcome dogs. Whether you’re heading to the Provençale countryside, the sun-soaked French Riviera, or the rolling vineyards of the Languedoc (Occitanie), having your furry companion with you can make your trip more enjoyable. No kennel fees or house sitters needed! The French cafes and restaurants are more open to allowing customers to enter with their dogs and most have special doggie water bowls.
Here’s an overview to ensure you and your dog have a smooth and enjoyable holiday in the South of France at one of our pet friendly villas.
Preparing for your trip:
Before setting off, there are a few essential steps to take to make sure your dog is ready for travel and that you comply with French pet regulations.
Health Check and Vaccinations:
- Vet Visit – Schedule an appointment with your vet to ensure your dog is healthy and up-to-date on vaccinations. The rabies vaccine is mandatory for dogs entering France, and it should be administered at least 21 days before travel.
- Animal Health Certificate (AHC) – This replaces the Pet Passport (unless issued by an EU Country) an AHC is obtained from your vet.
- Microchip – A microchip is required for all dogs travelling to France, it must conform to ISO 11784 and ISO 11785. Make sure it’s implanted and registered to ensure your pet can be easily identified.
- Returning to Great Britain from France – Tapeworm treatment must have been given no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours (5 days) before you enter Great Britain.
- We would recommend that you take out pet insurance that covers travel to France, as it’s better to be prepared for any health issues or emergencies while you’re away, just like you do for yourself.

Travel Essentials:
- Food and Supplies – Bring your dog’s regular food and any medications or supplements they take. Don’t forget essentials like water bowls, favourite toys, a lead and little black bags.
- Dog Travel Crate – Some Villa owners don’t like dogs being left on their own in the villa without being in a dog crate/cage. Many dogs like the familiarity if they have one at home.
Choosing a Dog-Friendly Villa:
Here’s what to look for when choosing a dog-friendly villa in the South of France:
Features to Consider:
- Secure Outdoor Space – A fenced garden is perfect for letting your dog roam safely, always double check on arrival at the villa.
- Proximity to Walkable Areas – Ensure the villa is located near parks, trails, or dog friendly beaches where your dog can enjoy long walks and exercise.
Research and Booking:
- Check the Rules – Read the villa’s pet policy to know if there are any size restrictions or breed limitations. South France Villas always request more information about your dog to check with the owner that the villa will be suitable.
Many holiday rentals that allow pets may have an extra fee in addition to the rules, examples of which are, pets not allowed in the pool, bedrooms, on furniture or cannot be left alone in the villa.
Ask Questions – Don’t hesitate to ask us at South France Villas about any specifics you may need, such as nearby veterinary services or local dog friendly attractions.
Transport:
Dogs are usually allowed on French public transportation, but there may be restrictions or additional fees, especially for larger dogs. Please note that dogs are not allowed on the Eurostar, they are however ok to travel in the car with you through the Eurotunnel. Many hotels en-route to the South Of France will accept dogs, services or aires as they are called in France, have plenty of grassed areas.
Ferries:
There are various options depending upon which company you use. For example, P&O ferries offer the best option with a pet lounge available so no need to leave your dog in the car. DFDS only have kennels and Irish Ferries have a pet den and Kennels. All ferry companies offer a stay in the car option, and dogs are not allowed to travel with a foot passenger on any of the Dover Calais routes except for Guide dogs.
During your stay in a South of France Villa:
General Pet Laws in France:
- Lead Requirements – Always keep your dog on a lead when in public spaces.
- Clean Up – Be respectful by picking up after your dog. Many towns and cities provide public waste bags and disposal bins. Historically France was notoriously bad at this, fortunately things have improved, and it is no longer acceptable, on the spot fines are also now being issued. Ensure the garden of the villa is also clean.
Beach Time:
The South of France is famous for its beaches, and some are dog-friendly even in the summer months. Popular spots like Cannes and Nice on the Cote d’Azur, along with Agde and Serignan in the Languedoc, have designated dog beaches where your dog can play in the sea and sand, perfect for an early morning or late evening walk. In the height of summer it is generally too hot on the beach for dogs.
Wine and Dine (Pet-Friendly):
Many cafes and restaurants with outdoor seating welcome dogs, but it’s courteous to ask before bringing your furry friend inside. They may well provide water for your dog whilst you enjoy a glass of wine and a meal with your dog relaxing by your side.
Essential Tips for a Stress-Free Villa Holiday in the South of France:
- Hydration and Heat – France can get very hot, especially in the summer. Ensure your dog stays hydrated and has access to shade when outdoors.
Travelling to France with your dog can be an enriching experience if you plan ahead and understand what’s involved. By making sure your dog is prepared and comfortable, choosing the right villa, and knowing the local rules, you’ll both be set for a memorable holiday. France’s picturesque landscapes, welcoming communities, and dog-friendly culture make it an ideal destination for dog lovers. Bon voyage!
